Squash Squad

Hey there,

Fall is fun. Not only it is a season for visual diets, but it’s also filled with colorful and delicious fruits & veggies.

Let’s call “early fall” the beginning of September and “late fall” the end of November. There’s plenty of delicious and nutritious time for both you and your pup! You can pick apples from late summer through late fall, cranberries from mid to late fall, and pears are throughout fall. When it comes to veggies, you have options from A to Z to pick from in the fall: arugula, beets, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, eggplant, kale, peppers, pumpkin, squash, sweet potatoes, and zucchini. Yummy in my tummy!

My favorite? I love so many fruits & vegetables, but anything that I can share with Morty gets moved to the top of my favorite list real quick.

Baking for two. Sharing is caring! Some for Morty, and some for me.

Thanks to chef Google, I found a yummy recipe for roasted acorn squash. It’s super easy, and frankly, I didn’t really follow the recipe to the T. I mainly stuck with the temp and time, and then I improvised with what I have in the kitchen. For Morty’s portion, I left all the other ingredients out, and simply added a little oil for her.

Just like that, 25 minutes or so later, Morty & I shared healthy snacks. Oh my, did I get a big brownie point from her! Happy doggie, happy home.

How about those pumpkins? I like pumpkin, and so does Morty. Pumpkins are amazing - just add a little fairy dust, and they transform into fancy carriages.

Seriously, though, can dogs eat pumpkin? Absolutely! It is like a double agent for digestion.

  • High in soluble fiber, it will add bulk to your dog’s stool. This helps reduce issues with diarrhea.

  • Because of the same high fiber content, pumpkin is a good choice to help with constipation as well.

I usually keep a can or two of pumpkin purée handy. Just make sure it is plain pumpkin purée and NOT pumpkin pie filling.

The amazing health benefits of veggies and squash are just too good to not let your dog try them. If your dog isn’t a fan of veggies or squash, try adding some to a treat recipe. Just remember to always gradually introduce any new diet to your pup.

Enjoy!
